Lafayette - While most people who contract covid-19 are able to fully recover within weeks, there are some who see lingering symptoms months after their initial infection.
Health experts have seen a high enough number of people with these lingering symptoms that there is a term for it called “long haulers.’ whether certain people might be more susceptible is a question even doctors don’t yet have the answer to.
"You can’t predict at this point who it is that might go on after they recover from their acute covid infection," said Regional Medical Director for Region four, Doctor Tina Stefanski.
Some of the lingering symptoms of those who recover from an initial covid infection include fatigue, muscle pain and memory loss.
Stacey LeBlanc, who has been suffering from lingering symptoms, said "it has definitely messed with my life."
She said was first hospitalized with covid-19 in June - one of her lingering symptoms was trouble breathing.
"I was in the hospital from June eleventh through the nineteenth," LeBlanc said. "I left the hospital on oxygen, and I am still currently on oxygen."
Leblanc said other lingering symptoms include constant headaches and memory loss, something that has impacted her job as a teacher.
"When I’m trying to explain something to a kid, it’ll take me a little bit longer to explain it to them because I can’t recall exactly what I’m trying to tell them."
Rachel foreman fought covid-19 for 10 days last December. She said a week after recovery She noticed symptoms returning - Including ones that weren’t previously present during her initial infection.
"I started actually feeling really short of breath which is something that didn’t really happen the first time," Foreman said. "I started having this weird rhythm in my heart where it would beat really really fast for no reason."
She said she experienced these symptoms off-and-on until she got the covid-19 vaccine earlier this year.
"It seemed to quit when I got my vaccine," she said. "Which I don’t know if that is a real thing or maybe I imagined it but once I got the vaccine, I never had post covid symptoms again."
