Lafayette, LA – At 4:32 on Saturday July 18,2020, Lafayette firefighters responded to an emergency call of a vehicle on fire in the 600 block of North Washington Street. When firefighters arrived, the vehicle under a carport was engulfed in flames. The heat from the fire ignited the carport and interior of the home. The occupants were outside in a safe location. The fire was brought under control within ten minutes. The vehicle and the home sustained heavy fire damage.

The dwelling was occupied by a family of seven: 3 adults and 4 children. The owner of the vehicle went to the store and returned home. Approximately ten minutes after arriving home, one of the kids sitting outside noticed the smoke coming from the engine compartment of the vehicle. They alerted their mother and got everyone out of the dwelling. The family lost most of everything in the fire. American Red Cross was notified to offer some assistance to the family.

A firefighter extinguishing the fire sustained a minor leg injury. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. He is expected to be okay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
