Lafayette, LA (KADN)-- For the first time ever the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team is Sun Belt regular-season champions. Former Ville Platte basketball star Ty Doucet is third on the team in scoring this year averaging almost 11 points a game. It's a pleasure to take her hometown team to the top.
"It means a lot," Ty said. 'Back home we made it the championship twice and we never got it. It was for a purpose that we got it over here."
She brings attention on the offensive side," head coach Garry Brodhead said. "They have to double her up and it brings attention for our guards."
Ty has been battling lower-body injuries for most of her career, but she refuses to use that as an excuse. Her toughness and tenacity have earned her teammates respect.
"Alot of pepole don't see all injuries and pain she fights through," senior guard JoMyra Mathis said. "You'll never know she's she wants it. She wants to win."
"I have been dealing with it since high school," Ty explained. "High school I didn't play two years. I didn't play my sophomore and junior year. I had three surgeries in two years and then my sophomore year of college I've just been dealing with the same injury. I can stop thinking about it and just push myself through it. Telling myself I can do it.
Ty's defense also pushes the Cajuns to another level. She is third in the conference in blocks with 31.
The timing of blocking shots," Ty said. "My freshman year, I didn't understand the timing now, but now I got it. Last year I started understanding it and now I got it."
Coach Broadhead says celebrating is a part of this team's DNA and with three more wins Ty's senior year continues in the NCAA tournament.
