(KADN)- Jury selection in the first-degree murder trial of Landon Broussard, the Lafayette man accused in the beating death of his then-girlfriend's three-year-old son, will begin December first.

The now-29-year-old Broussard was arrested November 29th 2012 after the death of Julian Madera, who died of blunt force trauma and whose body showed signs of repeated physical and likely sexual violence.

In minutes from a March 17th hearing just released today, we learn that prosecutors in the case have threatened to withdraw a life-in-prison plea deal offered to Broussard if his legal team goes through with another hearing set for May 24th.

Prosecutors had earlier indicated they would seek the death penalty.

Court records indicate that Madera's mother, Laura Smith, served jail time for one count of cruelty to a juvenile in connection with the case.
