Three St. Martinville Men Arrested In Connection With October 19th Shooting

Deputies with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting in the 7000 block of Cemetery Hwy., in St. Martinville, LA.

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. -  Deputies with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting in the 7000 block of Cemetery Hwy., in St. Martinville, LA. According to Sheriff Becket Breaux, the shooting took place on Tuesday October 19, 2021, at approximately 6:38 p.m.,

Upon arrival, Deputies learned that a male subject was riding a four-wheeler along with two other individuals when he was shot by unknown individuals. As a result of the shooting, he sustained a single gunshot wound to his neck and was subsequently transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.

At the culmination of the investigation, warrants of arrests were obtained for three individuals. On Friday afternoon, following the execution of two of the warrants, Deputies arrested the following individuals and charged them as follows:

Nakavin Hayward Batiste, 19, St. Martinville
3 Counts of LA R.S. (14:27) 14:30.1-Attempted 2nd Degree Murder
1 Count of LA R.S. 14:95 Illegal Carrying of a weapon-1 count
1 Count of LA R.S. 14:402 Contraband taking to/from penal institution
Devontae James Marshall, 20, St. Martinville
3 Counts of LA R.S. (14:27) 14:30.1-Attempted 2nd Degree Murder

He was also booked on the following charges in reference to an outstanding warrant for another law enforcement agency unrelated to this incident:
1 Count of LA R.S. 14:95E-Possession Firearm Committing/Attempt Crime
1 Count of LA R.S. 40:966A(1)-Possession with Intent to Distribute Schedule 1
1 Count of LA R.S. 40:1023C-Prohibited Acts-Possession of Drug Paraphernalia;
1 Count of LA R.S. 14:108.1B-Flight from an Officer-Aggravated

Following their arrests, they were booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center on the above charges. Nakavin Batiste’s bond was set at $85,000.00 and Devontae Marshall’s bond was set at $90,000.00.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 26, 2021, Deputies arrested the third suspect, Deiondre Dajuan Benjamin, 21, St. Martinville, LA., and charged him as follows:

1 Count of LA.R.S 14:95.1-Illegal Possession of firearm or carrying concealed weapon by a person convicted of certain felonies-- (Felony)
1 Count of LA R.S. 14:94-Illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities-- (Felony),
1 Count of LA R.S. 14:55-- Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property-- (Felony)
1 Count of LA 40:966A(1)-Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana
1 Count of LA 40:1023C-Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
1 Count of LA 14:91.13-Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance in Presence of a Juvenile
Following his arrest, he was booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center on the above charges, and his bond was set at $65,000.00.
