The CDC recommends indoor masking

Louisiana is now in it's fourth surge with Coronavirus - in an effort to help, the CDC has recommended people wear mask indoors.

LAFAYETTE, La. - Louisiana has the highest growth of COVID-19 cases in per capita in The United States. That's leaving many to wonder could we be entering another mask mandate for both out and indoors.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reverse on indoor masking is following the new spike in COVID-19 cases and heavy hospitalizations in southern states like Louisiana. Medical officials say the spike is due to low vaccination rates.

"Me, my husband and my kids are definitley vaccinated," said Lafayette resident Rilette Scott.

Residents like Rilette Scott and her family make up the almost 37% of Louisianians who are fully vaccinated.

"No I'm not vaccinated, I don't trust it, I wear my mask all the time," said Lafayette resident Chuckee Davis

Residents like Chuckee Davis make up the almost 63% of Louisianians who are unvaccinated.

In a press conference last week Governor John Bel Edwards said we are undeniably in our fourth Coronavirus surge. Our hospitalization rates have quadrupled in just one week.

"We would like to continue wearing mask just to go ahead and protect everyone because Louisiana now is the red state. The numbers are rising and it's not continuously going down," said Lafayette resident Rilette Scott.

"They came up with a remedy too quick and even if you get vaccinated you still have to wear a mask. You are still at risk of the virus so I'm up in the air," said Lafayette resident Chuckee Davis.

"There are risk to everyone, obesity is a big risk factor, diabetes, high blood pressure, immunocompromised patients. This includes people who are currently on chemo therapy, people who are getting immunosuppressants," said Dr. Britni Hebert.

From the start a simple face covering would do the trick but then materials were being questioned. A surgical mask was preferred over silk or cotton and then it was all about double masking.

With the Delta strain circulating more than five times the rate of the other strains the CDC wants everyone to mask especially those in high transmissable areas.

Right now other highly transmissable states besides Louisiana include Florida and just noth of us in Arkansas.
