State Police Identify Man Shot and Killed In Deputy-Involved Shooting in St. Mary Parish

Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a deputy in Berwick.

Berwick - On June 1, 2021, the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was requested by the Berwick Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting in the Town of Berwick, LA.

The preliminary investigation revealed at approximately 2:30 a.m., Berwick Police Department and St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to a report of a suspicious person. The subject, later identified as 37-year-old Robert Pearce of New Iberia, fled upon contact with law enforcement which led to a foot pursuit. Pearce then attempted to carjack a female motorist while armed with what appeared to be a handgun near Sixth Street and Utah Street. As Pearce made entry into the female motorist’s vehicle with the weapon, responding law enforcement personnel discharged their service weapons striking Pearce. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office. It was later determined that the handgun was a BB gun pistol.

No other injuries were reported. Louisiana State Police Crime Lab processed the scene for all evidence.

Louisiana State Police is the lead investigating agency. This is an active investigation and information will be released as the investigative process continues.


Berwick - Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting in St. Mary Parish. According to St. Mary Parish Sheriff Blaise Smith the occurred in the early morning hours of June 1, 2021, in Berwick. The shooting resulted in the death of one person.

“It is an unfortunate and tragic event that caused the loss of life. I stand behind and support the actions of my deputies and we are cooperating fully with the Louisiana State Police in this investigation,” said Sheriff Blaise Smith.
