WDSU- NEW ORLEANS —New Orleans city leaders are addressing public safety in a press conference Friday ahead of Mardi Gras.

According to New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, starting next Friday through Mardi Gras Day, all bars in New Orleans will be closed to indoor and outdoor service. No to-go drinks will be allowed.

This also applies to bars operating as restaurants with the A.R. conditional permits.

NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson says it will be "all hands on deck" to ensure large gatherings do not happen. Officers will be at every intersection on Bourbon Street.

Bourbon, Decatur and Frenchman streets will be closed Feb. 12-16. No people or cars.

Crowds of people were seen not socially distancing over the weekend.

This comes as we are entering the first weekend where dozens of krewes would have been rolling this weekend for the first big weekend of Carnival.

Mayor Cantrell said she is concerned about Mardi Gras and the potential for super spreaders. She says they have been working diligently to have a plan in place to activate this weekend.
