LAFAYETTE (KADN)-There have been many pedestrians involved in accidents and hit and runs across Acadiana in recent weeks. Here are some tips pedestrians can keep in mind to ensure their safety.

According to the Acadiana Planning Commission, pedestrians are the most vulnerable roadway users, so it’s best to make sure you take every safety precaution possible when traveling by foot.

“I know it's very tempting, and it's very easy to want to do a mid-block crossing, you know, outside of the crosswalk, but you know, you really you just lose so much visibility,” Ashley Moran, a representative from the Acadiana Planning Commission, said.

According to Moran, pedestrians involved in motor vehicle crashes are less likely to survive their injuries. That’s why it’s best to not assume that the driver can see you.

“When you’re the more vulnerable roadway user, you can't just make that assumption. You have to be more proactive and defensive with how you're operating on the transportation system,” she said.

Nureaka Ross, a resident of Lafayette's northside, said that when she was younger she and her mother traveled by foot, so she knows what it’s like to be a pedestrian.

“We walked along Evangeline Thruway, you know, to the Walmart that was there, Super One, and the conditions of Evangeline Thruway and Willow, and various other parts on the north side are in a deplorable state,” Ross said.

There is only so much a person can do to avoid being hit, so Ross believes that local officials should step in to ensure that all roads have space for pedestrians.

“Our city should do more to uphold and protect that rather than continue to just disregard the loss of human life,” she said.

The Acadiana Planning Commission recommends that pedestrians wear bright clothing or reflective gear when traveling.
