Although abortion in louisiana is legal there are many alternatives that provide a safe and legal way to care for a child such as the safe haven law.

The safe haven law was created for mothers who are unable to care for their baby or believe the baby's well-being is in danger.

Newborns up to 60 days old can be taken to an emergency designated facility with no legal action.

One of those facilities is the fire department i spoke with public information officier alton trahan and he says the law provides safety for the parent and the infant.

According to louisiana right to life roughly 8,000 abortions were provided in louisiana, though not all abortions that occurred in louisiana were provided to state residents.

There are currently 39 safe haven locations in Lafayette a few of them are Lafayette Fire Department (All Locations), Compass Behavioral Center, Lafayette General Hospital, and SWLA Center for Health Services.

Trahan says as long as the parent leaves their baby with an employee and the baby shows no signs of neglect, the parent can walk away with no legal action.
