LAFAYETTE, La. - In september, President Biden announced he was taking steps to get more Americans vaccinated in an effort to fight the Coronavirus. On Thursday, The Biden Administration rolled out two of those steps — two different vaccine rules covering more than 100 million workers.
The first rule issued by The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says that companies with more than 100 employees must be fully vaccinated by January 4th or get a negative covid test weekly.
This OSHA rule will take effect as soon as it's published in The Federal Register.
"I think it's unfair to force something that is so new and nothing should be forced. We live in a free country. I don't think it's really fair and then your'e out two weeks from work," said Mandeville.
The Biden Admistration does say that employers must pay workers for the time it takes to get vaccinated and provide sick leave for workers to recover from any side effects.
The second rule was issued by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. It requires healthcare workers to be vaccinated by the same date but for them there is not a weekly testing option.
"I think everybody is entitled to their own choice," said Sabatini.
Of the residents I spoke to here in Acadiana, many think the mandates are wrong.
"I don't think it's good idea because Americans that want to get the vaccine have already gotten the vaccine," said Mergist.
These rules will require some 84 million employees and 17 million healthcare workers to get vaccinated. Christian Sabatini is unvaccinated and plays football for The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, therefore he already gets weekly covid testing.
"I don't complain too much, I think if you don't want to get the shot then I think it's right that you should get tested to make sure you keep everyone around you safe," said Sabatini.
"I don't need The Federal Government telling me to go get the vaccine if i don't want it. They can't prescribe Tylenot if you get a fever so would they prescribe a vaccine if you don't want it," said Mergist.
For those who choose to remain unvaccinated the weekly covid testing is free but you must wear a mask at all times while on the job.
This move was designed to push workers to choose the vaccine over getting testing which is free. However, certain circumstances like religion may dictate otherwise.
