Several parents in St. Landry Parish are frustrated with the school lunch meals. Many of them say that their child waits to eat until they come home ..
“There are no protein options , they're telling me that it's because of lent season but this is a public school , and i don't understand why a public school would be practicing acatholic practice anyway , and i mean where are the fish sticks ??” Allie Soileau said.
There were outrages from parents that started with a post on facebook of lunch meals that were being provided in St. Landry Parish Schools. The post spreaded quickly , leading many parents to speak out. Concerned mother , Allie Soileau says parents just want answers during this time.
”My nephew was served sunflower seeds and beef jerky sticks and I've seen multiple other people comment on the pictures of that lunch so that was on monday, not friday so this isn't just a lent problem. ” Soileau said.
1300 kids are fed within the 34 schools in the Parish. The superintendent of St Landry Parish Schools, Patrick Jenkins argues that the viral photo does not tell the whole story.
“There were other choices that the child or whomever had that meal , had an opportunity to collect. There wasn't fruit on there , there wasn't the corn that was on there , there is also milk etc.” Jenkins said.
Jenkins says concerned parents should contact the district.
“We would encourage them to reach out to the cafeteria manager and also school principals which we will try to resolve any concerns that they may have and if they can't be resolved to reach out to our supervisor here as well” Jenkins said.
