One Person Injured In Catherine Street Fire

The cause of the fire was rule an accident.

Lafayette, LA –Lafayette firefighters responded to the100 block of Catherine Street for a reported house fire at 2:25 a.m. Friday morning. The neighbor called 911 stating a home was on fire and possibly one person injured. Firefighters arrived on scene to discover a fully involved duplex and a vehicle on fire under a carport. The occupant of the unit involved in the fire informed firefighters he sustained burn injuries. He was evaluated and treated on the scene by Acadian Ambulance. The injured occupant was transported by a friend to the hospital for further evaluation.

Emergency crews battled the blaze for approximately 15 minutes before getting it under control. Seven fire trucks responded to the incident with over 20 firefighters to assist in extinguishing the fire. Firefighters were on the scene for over 3 hours. The duplex consisted of 2 separate homes with a common roof. The unit where the fire originated sustained heavy fire damage. The other unit, occupied by a family of 3, sustained smoke and water damage.

The occupant where the fire originated indicated that a mattress against a gas furnace ignited. As he attempted to remove the burning mattress from the home, the fire caught other combustibles on fire. He alerted his neighbors to get everyone out of the home.
