LAFAYETTE, LA – The need for blood has been at its lowest for two years at Vitalent, something that is only getting worse with the newest Omicron variant of covid-19.

The organization needs blood to serve about 900 hospitals but they only have a two day supply nationwide.

“It can be a matter of life or death” John Pere Said.

For residents like John pere , giving blood is something that he feels led to do as the shortage for donors are falling.

“A safe supply of blood is critical to a number of things going on. There are people having surgery, in fact my son is having surgery today. It’s nothing major but you know it is a big need for blood.” John Pere Said.

Blood donations at Vitalant fell short of the need by more than 4,500 donations in December. Vitalent Communication manager , Steaphanie Kizziar says the trend has only continued into the new year.

“A lot of people are canceling their appointments. They are getting sick with the Omicron variant. Obviously you know in that case it's a good thing to cancel your appointment but what people are not doing is rebooking.” Stephanie Kizziar Said.

The shortage is most severe for type o blood, but donors of all types are needed to give blood or platelets. reports also show that they only have about 3% of the population that donates, yet the majority are still eligible.

“Until it hits home to someone's family, no one thinks about donating blood every single day but patients are still in the hospital and patients still need blood. life still goes on so we still need people to come out and donate every single day so that we can continue to fulfill our mission which is saving lives.” Synthia Trahan Said.

Donors who help in January, National Blood Donor month, will be entered into the $5,000 big game giveaway for a prepaid gift card. click here to learn more
