"Be patient with us we know that it's been two years now but the station is coming back and there going to be proud of the station when they see it"

A Lafayette fire station located at the corner of Cooper and Martin Luther King Jr. was approved to begin construction almost 2 years ago--but as everything closed during Covid-19, the building process was pushed back.

After the pandemic, the department had to reapply for funding but this time around it would be a 2 million dollar price tag instead of their original 1.2 million dollar estimate.

"We thought we budgeted enough money to take care rebuilding the station even though it would be twice the size of the original station that was built in 1970 it's 50 years old unfortunately because the construction cost has doubled and tripled in certain areas were feeling the brunt of that as well"

Chief Benoit says he's excited to see how this project will impact the community.

"So it's a win-win for the community because they get their station back but they get a better station a bigger station is going to look and blend in with the neighborhood and the firefighters get something they can enjoy living in while there protecting the citizens"

After construction details are finalized the station is set to be up and running within the next two years.

"So we're talking about it'll probably be another two years before it happens because that meeting we're having tomorrow with all of the people involved in building the station that's going to take another 30 days to make sure that we have everything were supposed to have in there before we go out for groundbreaking"
