LAKE CHARLES, La. – United Way of Southwest Louisiana provided 2,000 chairbacks to the Calcasieu Parish School Board for students in elementary schools this year. The chairbacks are a partnership with another nonprofit, Beauregard ARC, in DeRidder, La. The school board will distribute the chairbacks to students in need.
Beauregard ARC, a partner agency of United Way of Southwest Louisiana, supported programming efforts for the parish partly by a contract with Wal-Mart for handsewn chairbacks. The contract was not renewed this year, leaving the organization with a surplus.
"We are always looking for ways to support the work our partner agencies offer community members," says Denise Durel, President and CEO, United Way of Southwest Louisiana. "Each year, our WriteStart initiative benefits thousands of children across all five parishes with supplies, school fees and uniforms. We are excited to support an agency and fill a need for our school partners at the same time."
United Way of Southwest Louisiana's WriteStart initiative has purchased uniforms for HeadStart students in multiple parishes, funded school supplies, paid for STEM camps and the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program this school year.
