LAFAYETTE, LA (KADN) - Your last day of vacation abroad could be a lot less relaxing under President Joe Biden's new covid-19 safety protocols for travelers entering the U.S., which went into effect today. Just when we thought U.S. travel rules were starting to stabilize, along comes omicron.
The Biden administration rolled out travel bans on arrivals from eight nations in southern Africa. Travelers found themselves unexpectedly stranded and now U.S. officials are tightening travel regulations once again.
President Biden says "We don't know a lot about the variant except that it's of great concern and it seems to spread rapidly".
Things are changing by the day and all inbound international travelers are now required to test within one day of departure. Chase is a frequent traveler and says this could be a step in the right direction.
He says "I can't say it would potentially stop it but it'll definitely help the risk of spreading it more just by not allowing through international travel".
Healthcare professionals believe there's still a lot of uncertainty about the new variant but they do know that it spreads quicker than others.
She says "It is spreading faster in places where delta and other variants are going away we don't know if that's because more escape from immunity or because its more transmissible".
As a frequent traveler chase believes being vaccinated is important but if it doesn't work against omicron, we should still have other protocols in place.
He says "I haven't got covid yet and I've been exposed several times so if it works it works but if not there are different precautions you can take".
