New Roads, LA - In an effort to get everyone counted, City of New Roads Mayor Cornell Dukes launches the “Get in the Game” voter registration and census drive. This is an all hands on deck effort to increase census response rate with the census and voter registration. The event will be held at City Hall Wednesday, August 26, 2020 from 10 am to 2 pm.

The 2020 Census determines funding and representation. “This year Census is extremely important to the recovery of New Roads from the coronavirus crisis,” says Mayor Dukes. “The community response determines funding of vital services and programs. This initiative is about ensuring everyone is counted and every voice is heard. It’s about accessing resources that will make our community viable in the future.”

Wi-Fi will be available. Participants may either use their own devices or use Chrome-books to complete the census questionnaire. Hand washing stations will be accessible in front of City Hall. Volunteers and attendants will practice social distancing safety measures and face masks will be required. Assistance will be available for individuals who need additional support completing their census and registering to vote.

“The deadline is drawing near,” said Mayor Dukes. “We need to get everybody involved. Distrust of the government and privacy are great concerns. This is our opportunity to address these apprehensions and educate the community on the importance completing their Census as well as having a voice through voting.”

There will be 3000 gallons of FREE milk and boxes of food to give away as well as grab and go meals of delicious jambalaya. This is a free public event.
Due to COVID-19, the Census Bureau has extended its self-response timeline until September 30, 2020. The 2020 Census can be completed in one of three ways: by mail, over the phone, or online. More information can be found at 2020census.gov.
