UPDATE: Two Arrested in ATV Theft

According to Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, “Due to an ongoing rash of ATV thefts and drug activity, a street crime suppression team was created to help combat crime in the parish.”

UPDATE: According to Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, Investigators with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office received information on an ongoing investigation that involved the theft of several ATVs in the parish.” During the investigation, detectives were led to a residence  in St. Landry Parish.

Detectives along with narcotics investigators began surveillance on the residence and gathered enough information to obtain a search warrant. The suspect identified during the investigation was Jason C Leger of Washington and was known by law enforcement to carry a firearm. Detectives, with the assistance of the St. Landry Parish S.W.A.T team and narcotics investigators, executed the search warrant and found Leger in the residence with a firearm.

Upon searching the residence detectives recovered a stolen utility trailer valued at 1,500.00 dollars and two stolen Honda four-wheelers valued at a total of 5,000.00 dollars. Detectives were also assisted by the Louisiana State Police in identifying the ATVs. Sheriff Guidroz added, “We credit the success of this search warrant to the cooperation of the community with our deputies, team efforts displayed by all divisions within the St. Landry Parish Department, and outside agencies.”

On August 28, 2020, the team assisted patrol deputies on Bertrand Road for 3 ATV’s riding on the road without their lights on. Once deputies arrived, the three drivers of the ATV fled and a pursuit ensued.

One driver, identified as Cameron Fontenot, attempted to turn the four-wheeler in an area where it got stuck. Deputies began to approach Fontenot who exited the ATV and attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended.

Through the course of the investigation, it was learned that Cameron Fontenot was driving a green 2016 Honda ATV, which was confirmed stolen through the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office. Approximate value of the ATV is $6,000. The ATV was returned to its rightful owner.

Cameron Fontenot was transported to the St. Landry Parish Jail, and booked on the following charges: Flight from an Officer and Possession of Stolen Things.

More arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
