Duson Police responded to reports of money stolen from a till in the 200 block of Austria Road in Duson. Duson Police were told that while the employee of the casino was busy with other customers an unknown male reached over the counter and took $1,300.00 from a register till. The employees reported that this was verified by surveillance video.
As the initial investigating officer was reviewing video which captured the theft, the suspect returned at 12:34PM in an apparent attempt to steal additional money. The officer gave chase on foot, the suspect was able to reach a black Nissan Versa and flee, the officer did not immediately capture the suspect.
The Duson Officer developed a lead on where the suspect was possibly hiding out and with the assistance of Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Deputies located the vehicle driven by the same suspect leaving the area from which the lead came.
The officer and deputies attempted to stop the car at 1:35 PM, however the driver refused to pull over and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The pursuit traveled east to University, north to Gloria Switch, East to I-49, south to Willow, east to Moss Street and North to Alexander. At 1:45 PM the suspect crashed into a row of trees at the intersection of East Alexander and Lajaunie Road, the crash damage trapped the suspect inside the car, Lafayette Fire Fighters responded and extricated the suspect who was then transported to a local trauma center by Acadian Ambulance Service.
Officers were able to identify the subject as 22 year Triston Dupuis of Opelousas who is going to remain hospitalized with serious injuries but is reportedly in stable condition.
Dupuis will face felony theft charges, aggravated flight, resisting an officer as well as possession of marijuana charges.
Since the pursuit, Duson Police have discovered that two other thefts were committed by Dupuis at the same Casino Truck Stop one of those thefts exceeded $1,000 and the other was for approximately $300. And Lafayette Police have outstanding arrest warrants for Dupuis for a domestic abuse battery that he committed approximately a week ago.
So upon release from the local hospital Dupuis will be booked on charges of 2 counts felony theft, 1 count theft misdemeanor, aggravated flight, resisting an officer, possession of marijuana and a hold for Lafayette Police for domestic abuse battery.
