LAFAYETTE, La. – Our Lady of Lourdes once again received Blue Distinction® honors from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana for quality and cost efficiency in surgery.
The hospital was selected as Acadiana’s first Blue Distinction Center® for Knee and Hip Replacement in 2018. Recently, Our Lady of Lourdes received the next level, Blue Distinction Center+ designation, for Knee and Hip Replacement. In addition, the hospital received a new Blue Distinction Center designation for Spine Surgery, part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Our Lady of Lourdes is the only Blue Distinction Center in Acadiana offering both the ROSA® robotic knee system and Globus robotic spine surgery.
Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated healthcare facilities that show a commitment to delivering high-quality patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community and leading accreditation and quality organizations.
Knee and hip replacement procedures remain some of the most commonly performed, elective surgical procedures in the U.S., according to a 2018 study released by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. In 2014 there were 370,770 total hip replacements and 680,150 total knee replacements1.
Facilities designated as Blue Distinction Centers® for Knee and Hip Replacement demonstrate expertise in total knee and total hip replacement surgeries, resulting in fewer patient complications and hospital readmissions. Designated facilities include hospitals (with and without an onsite Intensive Care Unit) and Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC). All designated facilities must maintain national accreditation, and ASCs are also required to have an advanced orthopedic certification. In addition to meeting these quality thresholds, hospitals designated as Blue Distinction Centers+ are on average 20 percent more cost-efficient in an episode of care compared to other facilities.
Spinal surgeries are one of the most frequent types of elective surgeries in the U.S. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), there were more than 463,000 spinal fusion operations conducted in the U.S. in 2014, a procedure commonly done in the lumbar region of the lower back to treat back pain.
Facilities designated as Blue Distinction Centers® for Spine Surgery demonstrate expertise in cervical and lumbar fusion, cervical laminectomy and lumbar laminectomy/discectomy procedures, resulting in fewer patient complications and readmissions compared to other hospitals. All designated facilities must maintain national accreditation.
“Our Lady of Lourdes is humbled by our selection as a Blue Distinction Center®,” said Duke Walker, Our Lady of Lourdes Vice President of Orthopedics and Neurology. “The distinction is reflective of the commitment each physician, nurse and staff member put into providing the best quality care available in Acadiana for every patient, every day.”
The Blue Distinction Specialty Care program has helped patients find quality care in the areas of bariatric surgery, cancer care, cardiac care, cellular immunotherapy, gene therapy, knee and hip replacements, maternity care and spine surgery. Research for many of these programs shows that, compared to other providers, those designated as Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients.
