BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Louisiana Department of Education and LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center are helping educators and families better understand childhood obesity. Louisiana Fit Kids, a partnership between the Department and the research center, is hosting a webinar for families, teachers, school administrators, guidance counselors, child nutrition program professionals and other interested stakeholders.

Understanding Childhood Obesity will take place April 21 at 1:30 p.m. This live event will feature Dr. Peter Katzmarzyk and Dr. Candace Myers with Pennington Biomedical Research Center and Dr. Leah Robinson from the University of Michigan. The panel will discuss childhood obesity trends within the state, the relationship between obesity and food insecurity and the impact of physical activity in preschool and school-age children. Online registration is now open.

LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center partnered with the Louisiana Department of Education’s Division of Nutrition Support to launch the Louisiana Fit Kids project. Just as participation in USDA child nutrition programs is associated with increased academic performance, the Louisiana Fit Kids project aims to strengthen our state’s child nutrition programs to help bolster academic achievement and children’s success through a variety of key initiatives. Child nutrition programs in Louisiana play an important role in improving diet, reducing food insecurity and improving overall health. A healthy student is better enabled to learn and succeed, and all students in Louisiana deserve that chance.
