Lafayette,LA-  The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education expects federal officials' approval to drop school letter grades for at least one year. Grades for Louisiana students have been low before, but they dropped even more last year when thousands of students shifted to virtual learning.

"After what we've been through with the kids they should just kind of like a little bit more relaxed over it, just cut it for this year."

The spring release of test scores showed that students' test scores fell dramatically. Jenna Anderson says with the fact students are still getting adjusted to in-person learning again, their grades would be down. so, dropping the letter grade for a year on schools won't be a bad idea.

"I think that they should just maybe cut it for this year just because kids had this big gap in between the in person learning and they had the virtual learning. I just think its not fair."

Brandon Smith understands the letter grade for school would be detrimental to the state but is more focused on how this will help his daughter after seeing how she did with virtual. "My daughter was full virtual last year and now she is struggling this year, so I understand where they are coming from."

Though he agrees with the idea of stopping the letter grade for schools for a year, its only under one condition,"If they afford the kids the same chance that the schools are getting or if they help them further get back to where they were yeah I kind of agree with it."

The state board of elementary and secondary education prepared to finalize the move today during a committee meeting and by the full board on tomorrow.
