LAFAYETTE, LA (KADN)-Many people gathered in the Washington Heights neighborhood on Lafayette’s northside for a community cleanup and picnic.

Rev. Charles E. Banks Sr, the pastor of Fellowship Full Gospel Church said that he is leading the effort to keep the neighborhood clean.

“The ball has been dropped on our northside and the northside needs some attention,” Banks said.

Banks said that he feels like other community leaders doesn’t care about the northside, that’s why there is so much litter.

“They don’t wanna bring anything over here on the northside because of crime but we have to look beyond that… we can’t fault everybody for what goes on the northside deserves something better and something good in our communities,”

Banks hope the annual cleanup will influence the community to do better.

“We here to lead as an example, you know, if you just come out and mow someone’s yard or pick up a piece of paper, you don’t know what you’ve done for that community,” Banks said.

Members of the Upsilon Rho and Gamma Delta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. also stepped in to lend a helping hand.

“This is the poverty-stricken area or whatnot and we want to make sure that the community knows that we are on their side,” Marcus T. White, vice president of the Upsilon Rho chapter, said.

According to White, the city’s northside should be kept clean because it is the gateway to Lafayette.

“It’s very important that we make sure that the liter in Lafayette is picked up because we want Lafayette to be a beautiful city so when we have visitors and tourists come to Lafayette, they see that it’s a well-designed city,” White said.

Fellowship Full Gospel Church will be hosting its next cleanup later this summer.
