Lafayette, LA — The Lafayette Public Library is proudly participating in a national campaign to boost the early learning and brain development of children from birth through age three. The “Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing” campaign is part of Too Small to Fail, a national initiative of the Clinton Foundation.

Since home is where children begin to learn, parents and caregivers are their first and best teachers. Children develop essential language and literacy skills through everyday interactions such as reading books, telling stories, singing songs, and talking to one another. “Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing” aims to give parents and caregivers the tools to talk, read and sing more with their young children from birth, increasing meaningful interactions that are critical to healthy brain development. This initiative aims to help prepare children for critical language, math, and social-emotional skills they will need when entering kindergarten as well as lay a strong foundation for their social-emotional development, health, and lifelong learning.

The Lafayette Public Library is now handing out bags filled with items and resources handpicked by their own librarians to help parents and caregivers of children (birth through age three) incorporate the five practices of early literacy—singing, talking, reading, writing, and playing—into their daily lives. These bags will also include Early Literacy calendars and can be picked up from the Main Library or any of the Regional Libraries including the bookmobile.

Additionally, a “Storytime Jr.” playlist can be found at  https://www.youtube.com/user/lafpublib, and a Read to Me Book Club for children birth through age five will begin in January.
