LAFAYETTE PARISH PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MEMBERS ARE CRITICIZING THE SELECTION OF SPEAKERS FOR A BOOK DISCUSSION AFTER A REQUEST FOR FACILIATORS FROM OPPOSITE POLITICAL SIDES. THE DECISION HAS SOME QUESTIONING THE MOTIVES BEHIND IT AND IS STIRRING UP SOME CONTROVERSY AMONGST LIBRARY SUPPORTERS.

Teresa Elberson was the director of the Lafayette Parish Public Library system for 38 years until she suddenly retired. On January 25th, the library board members had a meeting and criticized the selection of speakers for a book discussion saying it was "far left". The book discussion was on the history of voting rights. Dr. Theodore Roster, Ph.D. is an assistant Professor of history at The University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He was selected by Elberson as one of the scholars to lead the book discussion. The library board rejected the $2,700 grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the humanities because board members said the speakers were too far left. The grant would've been used to pay for two books on the history of voting rights.
