LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. (KADN) - Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory issued a state of emergency for Lafayette ahead of tropical system Nicholas.

Acadiana could see significant rainfall September 14 as Nicholas moves through.

According to the state of emergency, "Residents should take steps to protect life and property."

Lafayette Consolidated Government is also reminding residents that it's against the law in the parish to drive any vehicle "through standing water in a manner that causes any wake or wave which introduces water or pushes additional water into any building or residence, unless the vehicle is an emergency vehicle."

LCG said that in many cases, the roadways are built to temporarily collect and detain excessive water to prevent that intrusion. Water should recede as drainage system capacity allows.
