UPDATE 2/11/2021 11:32AM- Lafayette, LA – The next of kin of the deceased has been notified. Fire officials have identified the deceased victim in the Mimosa Place Apartment fire, 155 Mimosa Place, as Gervies Lyle Semmens, 69 year old male. Mr. Semmens was the only occupant of the apartment.
Investigators determined the fire originated on the mattress in the bedroom. A cigarette may have contributed to the cause of the fire.
Neighbors were alerted by the smoke alarm activating in his apartment. Fire officials are continuing to investigate what prevented Mr. Semmens from exiting the dwelling.
Reports are pending from the coroner’s office.
Lafayette, LA – At 11:27 p.m. last night Lafayette firefighters responded to Mimosa Place Apartment, 155 Mimosa Place, for an apartment fire. Neighbors reported heavy smoke coming from the downstairs apartment. When firefighters arrived on scene, flames were coming from a bedroom window. The neighbors told first responder that the unit was occupied by an elderly man. Emergency crews entered the apartment to conduct search and rescue efforts. The occupant was found in the burning bedroom deceased. Firefighters extinguished the fire within ten minutes. The apartment sustained heavy fire damage.
Fire investigators with Lafayette Fire Department and Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office examined the scene. The fire originated in the bedroom. Preliminary findings indicate the fire started on the mattress in the bedroom. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office is assisting with determining the cause of death.
The identity of the deceased will not be released until next of kin is notified. The nearest family member is out of state.
