This week’s KidLit Pick of the Week is a set of books from the award-winning author, Jay Meletsky.
Ricky, the Rock that Couldn’t Roll
In this fun, spunky little story, 14 rock friends and one wise little ladybug get together to play and roll down their favorite hill. While doing so, they find that one of their friends, Ricky, can’t roll with them. Unlike all of the others, who are all round, Ricky can’t roll because he’s flat on one side.
Determined not to leave their friend behind, the rocks and the ladybug set out to help Ricky roll around – one way or another. This endearing picture book, written in verse, highlights perseverance and triumph in the face of adversity, and the power of true friendship.
Targeted for children ages 4-8, this is the first of a series of books featuring the “You Rock Group” that kids are sure to cherish as they grow, and learn from through empowering, motivating and fun-to-read stories.
The Bear and the Fern
In this heartfelt story, a young couple move into a new house and put their recently potted fern in the baby’s room with a vibrant stuffed bear.
Each night, Bear wants to go outside and play, imploring Fern to come along with him. But Fern is stuck in her ways and doesn’t believe that potted plants can move at all – she believes it so strongly that she refuses to even try.
Months and years pass by but Bear never stops trying to get his friend to join him in his adventures. Luckily, fern learns to try something new before it’s too late.
This is a beautiful, triumphant story of an unlikely friendship, and the importance of taking risks…but to also appreciate new milestones as they happen.
Beware of the Nose-Biting Monster!
Told from a parent’s point-of-view, “Beware of the Nose-Biting Monster!” is a silly story about what all parents go through right after their kids first start growing teeth – when every finger, ear, cheek and nose is suddenly in danger of being bitten! At the same time, it’s also a sweet story about communication and the special bond that exists between parents and their kids.
Written for kids ages 3-8, “Beware of the Nose-Biting Monster” is a book that both parents and their children can enjoy!
