Investigation Ongoing in Reference to Inmate Death

Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Sunday July 12, 2020, while Correctional Officers with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office were performing their rounds, they discovered a male inmate unresponsive in his bunk.

St. Martinville, LA -Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Sunday July 12, 2020, while Correctional Officers with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office were performing their rounds, they discovered a male inmate unresponsive in his bunk. Lifesaving efforts were immediately initiated by Corrections personnel and continued until the arrival of Acadian Ambulance. The inmate was subsequently transported to a local hospital where shortly after arrival, was pronounced dead.
The investigation remains ongoing by the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office and the U.S. Marshal’s Office.
The official cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.
