Lafayette, LA - Gov. John Bel Edwards ended the states mask mandate today, an issue that still has divided residents.

"This is ridiculous this is not what i served this country for," says Niel Duncan.

As recently as Saturday the Governor's mask mandate drew protestors out in Lafayette.

"It's time to, you know, get from under the mask and see if it works."

Fast forward to Tuesday ... Mark Manalo sees the state decrease in lower rates of COVID-19 infection as a way to get away from the mask but plans to follow whatever the Governor chooses. "I'm willing to do whatever the Governor thinks is best. That's what I've been doing all along. I'm ready to take the mask off but, I'm willing to wear it if its necessary."

David Mitchell has underlying health conditions and sees the hospitalization decrease happening because of mask mandates improvements in the fight to slow the spread down. "I have mesothelioma on my lungs and we need to get more people vaccinated. We need it because right now these masks are saving lives in my eyes."

After losing a friend to COVID-19, Mitchell understands people may be unconfrontable with the mask, but studies have shown that wearing a mask works.

"I have a hard time breathing with the mask, but its for my safety and your safety, so I feel we need to keep that going on for a while until we can get more people vaccinated.

Gov. Edwards is keeping face-covering rules for Louisiana's K-12 schools, but there is a option for schools to opt out. CDC still says everyone 2 years of age or older who is not fully vaccinated should wear a mask in indoor public places.
