LAFAYETTE, La. - This week Louisianans have been doing their best to prepare for Hurricane Ida. Today a hurricane watch was listed for all of Acadiana.

If you're like many you've been ripping and and running around town this week trying to make sure you have all the necessary essentials at hand incase power goes out. Here are some of those essentials.

If you lose power it could get pretty hot for some people. Slemco's Communications Coordinator Mary Laurent says you can start prepping yourself now.

"Run your ceiling fans because that brushes the air across your skin making you feel cooler so that you can tolerate a higher temperature. We also suggest that you don't wear heavy clothes," said Laurent.

You could also look to invest in a battery powered fan.

Now here's a list of food items you'll want to have, they require zero food preperation:

1 Gallon of drinking water per day per person
Dry cereal
Canned fruits
Canned vegetables
Canned juice
Ready to eat canned soups and meats
Canned pasta
Canned beans
Peanut Butter
Bread
Bananas
Apples
Oranges
Crackers
Nuts
Granola and energy bars

I said "and for minimal food prep look for rice, pasta, pasta sauce, seasonings and oats."

"Maybe grill something outside, grill vegetables, grill seafood, grill meat outside. That way you can keep the heat out of the home," said Laurent.

"Dry goods, canned goods, water," said Vincent.

Louisiana resident Shane Vincent is doing his best to prep his family of five for the hurricane. He's focused on supplies.

"Cleaning supplies because COVID-19 is going around and you know less water, less air. People are going to get more sick so that's things that were focused on right now," said Vincent.

In your supply kit you'll want to add soap, cash, a lighter, toilet paper and a portable charger. You will also need these items:

First aid kit

Moist towelettes
Garbage bags
Dish soap
Aluminum foil
Paper towels
Paper plates and cups
Plastic utensils
Food storage bags or containers
Flashlight
Tool kit
Mosquito Repellent
Rain gear
Plastic sheeting
Rope
Duct tape
Grill
Charcoal
Lighter fluid
Manual can opener
Fully-charged cell phone
Strike-anywhere matches

For our furry friends load up on pet food, a leash, collar, food bowls and a carrier.

One last thing, if you have a baby make sure to get diapers, wipes, formula, baby food, bottles and rash ointment.
