Krystal Dawn Mcnemar and those at Acadiana counseling center have seen for themselves what happens when mental health is not properly treated.

"So I think when you care for your mental health and you do the things that are required to do that like self-care or getting assistance if you need assistance your life just has a better outcome"

The main message from local psychologists is that taking care of your mental health should never be an option but a priority.

"It's important for us to take it seriously and I know that mental health is the first thing that takes a hit when budget gets cut and I think that's really a terrible thing because in the long run, it's very much more expensive"

Mental health can be scary for parents and some Louisianans may be putting off getting the help they need because they're afraid they can't afford to pay for services.

"It's a very scary thing for parents but don't be afraid just sit down with them have an open conversation with them create the space for them to be open and honest about how they're feeling identify with them if you can and normalize some of it because everybody has some anxiety everybody has some sadness but look for the important questions"
