LAFAYETTE, La. - It's time to do some trick or treating which means tons of cute little witches and spidermans will be knocking on our doors for candy. Due to COVID-19 people have been experincing supply chain issues globally. It's been effecting inventory, compensation and man power just to name a few things and now it's affecting halloween attire.

"I'm shopping for different parts of a costume, the kids want me to dress as a unicorn this year," said Roy.

The Halloween and Costume Association declared an official shortage at the same time The CDC gave trick or treating the green light, shortly afterwards halloween attire and decor sales shot up by 25%.

"We've looked at Walmart, we've looked at Target," said Smith.

Due to the worldwide supply chain crisis retail stores can't keep up with demand causing a costume shortage. Residents like Clayton Roy are struggling to complete their outfits. He will be a unicorn.

"This is going to be the tail and the main or part of it. I have some other colors as well. I am having a hard time finding the horse mask, the nose to make it complete," said Roy.

Others like Dori Cantrelle can't find any part of thier costume so they've had to get creative.

"Right now my girlfriend is actually inside shopping for some fabric. She's going to kind of home make a little costume for halloween," said Cantrelle.

Empty shelves are everywhere you look when shopping. The National Retail Federation says people will spend a record $10 billion dollars on halloween related items. $3 billion are geared towards clothing.

"Spirit gum for my daughter ears to adhere her elf ears to her ears," said Smith.

Amber Smith has had better luck, she went shopping for her daughters elf costume months ago but she's finding other challenges this halloween.  Alongside a costume shortage, there's one for candy as well.

"I have personally been looking for candy for Lafayette High band kids becasue they have a rehearsal on the 30th and you can't find that anywhere. Any, any candy, any of the big bags of candy because were giving candy to 175 kids.

Retailers like Halloween Express say if you haven't already gotten a costume do it as soon as possible. They say it's already too late to do any special orders. The Halloween and Costume Association says retailers worldwide are experiencing shortages not just for costumes and candy but also make up and mask.
