LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A group opposed to experiments on animals says a Louisiana university should be fined $30,000 because heat stroke apparently killed three research monkeys on the same day last summer. Michael Budkie of the Ohio-based nonprofit Stop Animal Exploitation Now says negligence and poor handling caused the deaths at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's New Iberia Research Center. The university said staffers at the center used standard measures in the afternoons to help the animals stay cool. It said they could not have anticipated the deaths and are taking additional measures. A federal official described those actions as timely and appropriate.
