LAFAYETTE, LA -- Fentanyl overdoses continue to increase throughout the nation -- including right here in Lafayette Parish. One organization is working to stop those overdoses from happening.

Acadiana harm reduction was formed because of the number of people dealing with addiction and mental health issues during the pandemic.

“All it takes is just a small sprinkle to kill someone.” Micha Smith Said.

An increase in Fentanyl overdoses throughout Lafayette Parish is leading one organization to work to put a stop to the epidemic in the area.

“They feel the only way they can channel themselves is through using drugs. There are so many kids right now growing up getting athletic energies and having opioids prescribed to them at a young age. That is not helping at all.” Micha Smith Said.

According to the coroner’s office, the numbers from fentanyl deaths are doubling as Lafayette Parish has seen 53 deaths so far from overdose. 42 of those are from fentanyl.

“People have trauma, they have problems. They have mental illnesses. They have mental illness; they have problems and the drugs they are trying to fix themselves. We need to stop arresting addicts. We need to start putting them in care facilities.” Kady Douglas Said.

At any given time thousands of narcan doses are available for those that are struggling with addiction and want to help reverse possible overdoses.

Now if you or anyone else is in need of Narcan, the organization will be ready to deliver it to you at no cost. Click here to learn more.
