Lake Charles – On Friday, August 21, 2020 at approximately 8:40 pm, Troopers with Troop D began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on LA 385 at W. Lincoln Road. The crash took the life of 25-year-old Draven Shumans of Mount Vernon, GA.
The preliminary investigation revealed Shumans was traveling south on LA 385 on a 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. As he approached the intersection with W. Lincoln Road, the driver of a 2004 Dodge Ram was traveling north on LA 385 and attempted to make a left turn onto W. Lincoln Road in front of Shumans. He struck the passenger side of the Dodge and was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Shumans was wearing a DOT approved helmet and a standard toxicology report is pending. The driver of the Dodge was restrained and uninjured in the crash. She provided a breath sample which showed no alcohol present. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers remind motorists to always look and make sure it is clear before pulling into traffic or turning at intersections. Always watch vehicles as they approach and gauge the distance they are covering as they approach. Never try and “make it” across when it is unsafe to do so. Keep distractions to a minimum and keep your focus on the road. It only takes a fraction of a second for a crash to occur.
Troop D has investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 20 deaths so far this year.
