LAFAYETTE - Memorial day weekend is one of the first holidays to have a huge spike in travel since COVID-19 vaccinations first became available. With new loosened coronavirus restrictions in place the amount of drivers on the road is only expected to increase.

It will increase by 60% for this weekends Memorial day holiday. Louisiana State Trooper Thomas Gossen says their click it or tick it campaign is still in effect.

"By all means that airbag is not something that can stand alone. The seatbelt is the safest feature of the car." said Gossen

A person is two times more likely to die if the person behind them is'nt wearing a seatbelt. That's why this weekend esecially State Troopers are looking for everyone to have fastened seatbelts.

"Once you get pulled over for the passenger I'm checking the driver's drivers license, I'm checking the insurance, the registration. It's a full traffic stop just because of the passenger."

Louisiana resident Tyler Keeler is hitting the road to Nola for a Memorial Day crawfish boil. He won't have passengers with him but his car will be packed with cooking supplies.

"Safety is kind of key, I'm always about strapping things down. Making sure that everything is tight but also I grew learning that your seatbelt is the most important thing. That's the first thing that you do when you get in the car." said Keeler

Keeler says when your foot hits the gas you're driving for yourself and others.

"I'm hoping other drivers will do the same so that if there were a collision or anything like that were to happen then all parties are safe." said Keeler

To be safe we should all be wearing our seatbelts across our chest only.

"Putting it under your arm changes the design of the seatbelt completley because it spreads on the harder bones of the body. Now it puts it on the softer bones which are the ribs that are now going to turn in and cause internal injuries." said Gossen

Wearing your seatbelt can also stop you or an object in your car from becoming an uncontrolled force. Simply multiply your weight by your speed.
