Lafayette,LA - Crime is something that every community deals with. Abbeville's Police Department and Sheriff's Office are teaming up to try and drop the crime rate in Abbeville.
"Exactly three fifteen in the morning *makes gun sounds* driveby", says one Abbeville resident.
There has been an uptick in criminal activity in the abbeville area. The resident says he's lived there all his life and sometimes wakes up to the sounds of gunshots. "I mean rapid fires, all pistols. I'm in bed, I get in the floor. This last time just a few weeks ago."
As a result, the Criminal Suppression Ynit was reactivated between the Abbeville Police Department and the Sheriff's Office to focus on street crimes and violence in the Abbeville area.
Chief Spearman told NEWS15 that this helps them alot especially with the fact that they've had a shortage in workers, "The effort and the man power from the sheriff's office. Helping my agents work on the streets, keeps us arresting violent criminals that we need to arrest and picking up firearms and weapons off the street."
With both working together, Chief Spearman says they've seen significant progress and wants the community to know that their goal is to bring the crime rate way down. "We've made arrest and several cases, high profile cases. We've picked up firearms. We are up to forty-four firearms so far that we've picked up off the streets since first of the year."
A resident says that he is thankful that the unit is reactivated, and now he can rest better at night. "Sleeping better at nights and the children playing outside a little more, all around a much better feeling about it."
Chief Spearman is confident that the crime suppression unit will see that the crime rates drop with both offices working together. He also says that solving the case starts with the community. If you know anything about a crime or anything illegal happening in the community let them know. Your identity will not be disclosed.
