LAFAYETTE – A Louisiana state representative has filed a bill that would do away with concealed carry permits in the state.

House Bill 16 was filed February 18 by Rep. Danny McCormick (R-Oil City). If passed, HB16 would allow a person to carry a concealed handgun without a license or permit. Those carrying would have to be 18-years or older and not be prohibited from having a firearm under federal or state laws.

Gun experts News15 spoke to say the proposal could be harmful.

“How to handle a pistol safely and knowing when you can use deadly force and when you can't use deadly force. Without that training we're going to have a bunch of gun totting people that aren't qualified or haven't had the proper training.," said Reggie Smith. Smith is a retired Louisiana State Trooper who now teaches concealed carry classes.

Firearm instructor Chris Ortego said no concealed carry permits means important information couldn’t be checked.

"The medical release so they can check your medical background and the other one is that you do agree and attest that you have read the Louisiana concealed carry law book,” Ortego said.

If the legislation passes, Louisiana would become the 19th state with relaxed concealed carry laws.
