LAFAYETTE - Lately our drainage pipes have been backed up a little more than usual and it turns out there's one task that we can all do to help unclog them. It all starts with the up keeping of our property.

Lafayette Consolidated Government's Director of Drainage Brian Smith says often times after mowing the lawn we tend to put our lawn waste into coulees and ditches.

"I know in the fall when the leaves fall you'll get a lot of that debris accumulation. Leaves, sticks and so forth infront of the opening of culverts, drainage inlets." said Smith

Anything drainage related infront of our house like overflowing gutters serves a purpose so we need to keep them open.
It might be hard for some of us to keep our property's free of debris. Slemco's Communications Coordinator Mary Laurent says they can help, especially since hurricane season is coming.

"The ride away tree trimmers who have to make sure that the tree limbs are out of the lines so that the power can go through uninterrupted. it's crucial, it's vital and critical that we have enough man power, enough equipment, enough supplies and material." said Laurent

Keeping drainage pipes unclogged is'nt just something that the adults can help with.

"Children for instance, toys, a ball is one of the worst things that can get into a drain. it could plug it just like a cork would if it gets lodged within there." said Smith

For the safety of children and potential up and coming flood waters parents should make sure their children are playing in a fenced area.

The public can also help with lawn clean up by reaching out to LCG's 311 system, it allows us to mobily report service request.
