Lafayette,LA- From cleaning supplies to a refrigerator -- items were stolen from the Assist Agency Women's Shelter this past month. They are asking for the community's help – both in donations and catching whoever is doing this.
"It was unbelievable to think that someone would do something like that."
The past month has been challenging for the Assist Agency Shelter in Crowley.
Assist director Sharon Clement tells me it's hard to believe that they've had four incidents of robbery reported during the past month, including last weekend. "Especially this time of year and with the high incidents of homeless in our area... It's unbelievable."
A week after the first incident, the agency contacted a company about setting up cameras. Before it could happen – another theft, this time -- the culprits got in from the windows by taking the a/c unit out.
"Whoever did it noticed that the security system was not completely installed, and they just came back for some items that they saw during the first visit," Clement believes.
The cameras are being installed now – a relief for Clement. "Since we are going to be able to monitor the activity around the shelter. The alarm is set on the doors and windows. It will be connected to the local police department.
Clement hopes they can put the past month's activities behind them, and the culprits don't return. "I think it will be a deterrent to anybody else who might have the idea to break in."
An investigation is still underway. Crowley police department and crime stoppers of Acadia Parish are asking for the publics help in making an arrest. Callers can remain anonymous.
