LAFAYETTE, La. - The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which started out with fury and ended quietly, is finally over.

Here are the stats:
-sixth consecutive above-average season
-third most active year for named storms
-twenty one named storms (average is fourteen)
-seven hurricanes (average is six)
-four major hurricanes (average is three)
-eight storms hit the U.S. coastline

The most destructive storm of the season was Hurricane Ida in late August. Ida made landfall at Port Fourchon, Louisiana on the 29th with a category four wind measurement of 148 mph at Grand Isle. Ida ravaged Louisiana as a major hurricane for several hours and maintained strength over land unusually long. 1 million residents of SE Louisiana lost power and didn't get it back for more than a week. The storm claimed four lives in Louisiana and hospitalized nearly 150, mostly from carbon monoxide poisoning. The biggest takeaway from the storm...is to set up a generator at least 20 feet away from homes.

Ida was not done after it left the Gulf Coast...the storm moved northeast, causing incredible damage, spawning tornadoes into the Mid Atlantic, and flooded the New York City subway system. More than 1,0000 miles away the storm even claimed a life in New England by sweeping a CT state trooper away in rising floodwaters.
