Childhood Hunger Increasing In Acadiana

Second Harvest Food Bank is lacking volunteers to help combat childhood hunger in Acadiana.

The need for help feeding hungry children in Acadiana is increasing more than ever.

“That risk is intensifying , what we are trying to do here is just combat that.” Paul scelfo Said.

Paul scelfo with the second harvest says one in four children is dealing with food insecurity , and the number of children needing food has increased even more during the pandemic.

“30% of the people who usually have food insecurity , don't have private transportation so as covid hit those families aren't able to get out and get food like they use too.” Paul scelfo Said.

With a shortage in volunteers , Second Harvest worries that those needs won't be met to fight childhood hunger in the community.

“What we are trying to do is bridge that gap between the summer programs and allowing them to eat a hot meal daily. The more people that will come out and volunteer , the more we are able to help young kids get food.” Paul scelfo Said.

Food bank volunteers hoping for the best as they move into the summer months.

“There are kids in Lake Charles that we still are preparing meals for. Hot and frozen meals so just the need for volunteers to help us prepare the meals, sort the meals , put them in boxes, get meal kits together, load them up and unload them for us, is in desperate need.” Ana moresi Said.

While Second Harvest is preparing meals here in Acadiana, they are continuing to help those in Lake Charles after the devastation of last hurricane season.
