LSUE Athletics Excels In Classroom, Places 23 On NJCAA All-Academic Team

EUNICE, La. – LSU Eunice athletics enjoyed another banner year in the classroom as 23 Bengals were named to the NJCAA All-Academic team, the organization recently announced. The 23 award winners is just one shy of the department record, set last year during the 2019-2020 academic calendar.

LSUE also saw three of its teams – softball, baseball and women’s soccer – earn NJCAA Academic Team of the Year designation, the most in athletic department history.

“As an athletic department, we want our student-athletes to compete in everything they do and this a great indicator of the competitiveness of our young men and women in the classroom,” LSU Eunice athletic director Jeff Willis said. “For us to place another 20-plus students on the All-Academic team as well as half our department earn ‘Academic Team of the Year’ recognition shows the determination of our student-athletes in the classroom.”

The baseball team led the way with nine All-Academic selections including four first-team members in Austin Andrishok, Jacob Hammond, Brady Hebert and Thomas Stevens. Softball’s Rylie Candella was the other first-team member.

Baseball also totaled a team GPA of 3.30 for another Academic Team of the Year recognition.

The NJCAA had 8,272 sutdent-athletes honored for achieving a grade point average higher than 3.60 during the 2020-21 academic year. The critieria for the three All-Academic teams are listed below:

NJCAA All-Academic First Team: 4.00 GPA
NJCAA All-Academic Second Team: 3.80-3.99 GPA
NJCAA All-Academic Third Team: 3.60-3.79 GPA

Women’s Soccer produced a program-best five recipients headlined by second-team member Gabrielle Felix. The squad also posted a record 3.21 team GPA to receive Academic Team of the Year Honors.

Softball produced the highest team GPA on campus with a 3.31 with six of its student-athletes receiving All-Academic honors.

Both basketball teams had one member on the All-Academic with John Kenoye and Chelsey White earning a third-team designation.
